Welcome to the Business Brain.

In the upcoming weeks, I will be starting a new chapter — a master’s in occupational psychology (OP). I’m excited to take you on the journey with me through my new blog!

In brief, OP applies psychological understanding to workplace and organisational issues. It seeks to understand and optimise how companies approach ‘people challenges’ such as recruitment, development, leadership, and culture.

One of the things that led me to drive my career in this direction is something Dr. Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic (a professor of Business Psychology and international authority in people analytics) refers to as the ‘science-practitioner gap’.

This is the gap between what psychological science knows and what businesses practice.

Something no doubt we have all experienced in our careers to date, as it manifests through bad managers, lack of transparency on progression and remuneration, and an absence of strategy and direction.

I want to use this blog to review why this gap exists. As individuals who work (or have worked) for businesses, I would love to get your views, thoughts and opinions as I delve into these topics that I hope that you will find stimulating and relevant. Please feel free to jump in to discuss, debate or equally enjoy (I hope!) from the sidelines. If you have any general feedback on how I could improve the blog, feel free to shout!

Whilst I intend to make these blog posts opinion-based to provoke discussion, I will also, where possible, share data and statistics. I believe this is important to underpinning thoughts and to ensure what we discuss isn’t entirely subjective — I would encourage you to do the same.

Let’s explore the business brain. Watch out for the first blog post coming soon!
